I am Area Editor for Temporal Databases (with Rick Snodgrass) of the Encyclopedia of Database Systems. I was Editor-in-Chief of ACM TODS from 2014 to 2020 and an Editor-in-Chief of The VLDB Journal from 2007 to 2014, and I serve or have served as an Associate Editor for the ACM Transactions on Database Systems, the ACM Transactions on Spatial Algorithms and Systems, the IEEE Computer Society Bulletin of the Technical Committee on Data Engineering, and for the IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering.
I am a member emeritus of the EDBT Endowment and the VLDB Endowment's Board of Trustees.
I was general chair of the International Workshop on Temporal Databases, held in Zurich, Switzerland, in September 1995. Incidentally, this was, I believe, the very first VLDB co-located workshop held in cooperation with the VLDB Endowment. I was PC vice-chair, covering temporal and spatial database systems, for ICDE'98, co-chair the PC for the Workshop on Spatio-Temporal Database Management (co-located with VLDB'99), and co-PC chair for the Seventh International Symposium on Spatial and Temporal Databases, held in Los Angeles in July 2001. I chaired the PC of the Eighth EDBT conference, held in Prague in March 2002. The conference was promoted by the EDBT Endowment and supported by the VLDB Endowment. I served as what is officially known as first opponent at Erlend Tøsebro's Ph.D. defense. Here are some photos from the day of the defense. I was technical program chair for the 2005 VLDB conference, held in Trondheim, Norway, from August 30 to September 2. Here are the slides I presented at the opening session. Together with Gustavo Alonso, Bernhard Mitschang, and Oddvar Risnes, I organized a Dagstuhl Seminar entitled "Data Always and Everywhere - Management of Mobile, Ubiquitous, Pervasive, and Sensor Data" that took place October 16-21, 2005. I co-chaired the program committee for MobiDE'06, which was held together with ACM SIGMOD'06, and I co-chaired the program committee of MDM'07, which was held in Mannheim, Germany. In was vice pc-chair for ICDE 2008, co-chair of the program committee of TIME'08, held in Montreal, Canada, and co-chair of the program committee of DMSN'08, held in Auckland, New Zealand together with VLDB'08. I was general co-chair of DMSN'09, held with VLDB in Lyon, France, workshops co-chair of ICDE'10, to held in Los Angeles, CA, USA, and general co-chair of MDM'10, held in Kansas City, MO, USA.
I am co-PC chair for ACM SIGSPATIAL ISA 2010, to be held with ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS in San Jose, CA, USA, I co-organize PerCoSC 2011, to be held with PerCom in Seattle, WA, USA, and I will serve as PC chair for the 2011 ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS conference.
In 2009, I serve on the PCs of EDBT, ICDE, ISA, QuaCon, MobiDE, and SIGMOD, and VLDB.
In 2010, I serve on the PCs of UDM, MASSIVE, MobiDE, SSDBM, DNSN, and VLDB.
In 2011, I serve on the PCs of EDBT, IW3C2, IEEE MDM, MASSIVE, SSTD, and VLDB.
In 2012, I serve on the PC of VLDB.
